Bernardo is Don Diego de la Vega's loyal manservant, accomplice and most trusted friend. Bernardo first began serving Diego in Spain, and then accompanied his master to California. Bernardo is mute, but pretends to also be deaf so people will speak freely in front of him. Bernardo primarily aides Zorro by spying for information, but tries to help Zorro in any other way he can.
The character of Bernardo is sometimes called by different names in some film or tv versions, but fulfills the same role in the story. Bernardo does not appear in the film The Mask of Zorro (1998), but the aging Don Diego de la Vega (played by Anthony Hopkins) recalls Bernardo fondly and pays tribute by serving as manservant to his successor, Alejandro Murrieta.
